Gear Ratio Guide

Ring and pinion swaps are ideal after the installation of large, over-sized tires. They help restore lost power caused by the extra "leverage" working against your tires to complete each rotation. The chart below can give you a general idea of what RPM your engine will run at with a specific ring and pinion gear ratio and tire size. Simply find your tire size in inches (left side of the chart) and desired gear ratio (top of the chart). Wherever those two meet on the chart is an estimation of your engine's RPM while the transmission is in a 1:1 ratio at 65mph. A 1:1 ratio is the 3rd gear on a 3-speed transmission and the 4th gear on a 4-speed or 5-speed transmission. Transmissions with five or more speeds will allow for lower RPMs than indicated in the chart because they have overdrive.

  PROS: Lower RPMs for highway driving (improved fuel economy).
CONS: Ultra-low speeds for off-roading is sacrificed.
  Best combination for returning your gear ratio back to factory.
  PROS: Lower speeds for easier off-roading and towing.
CONS: High speeds for highway driving is sacrificed (reduced fuel economy).
